UCC wishes to appoint to the role of Lecturer in Digital Humanities. Reporting to the Head of the Department of Digital Humanities to teach in UCC and in the Communications University of China (CUC) Beijing on the Joint BA Programme, Digital Culture and Society and on our MA programmes, with a view to supervision at PhD level.

We seek to appoint two lecturers in Digital Humanities; including Digital Cultures, Digital Society, Digital Stylometry, Data Visualisation, Network Analysis, Digital/Media Arts, and other areas which require knowledge of and the ability to teach programming languages such as JavaScript, R, or Python.

Duties will include research, research-led teaching and administration within the School of English and Digital Humanities with a specific focus on teaching a generalist undergraduate programme of Digital Humanities. Appointees will be required to spend several months each year in China.

Duties & Responsibilities

Faculty Workload

  • Collaborates with Human Resources, payroll department, division deans, and department heads to achieve timely and accurate faculty workload processing.
  • Maintains faculty records in PeopleSoft Campus Solutions pillar. Adds new faculty to instructor/advisor table, verifies department and funding assignments, and requests new job instances and/or combination codes from Human Resources as needed.
  • Reviews and updates faculty workload in class schedule, including job and assignment types. Ensures accurate distribution of faculty load for sections with multiple instructors.
  • Calculates quarterly loads for full-time faculty; researches and resolves issues with below-band loads. Calculates, enters, and/or adjusts moonlight loads.
  • Calculates quarterly loads for associate faculty. Calculates Senior Associate loads and enters and/or adjusts assignment types to ensure maximum contractual SA stipend is not exceeded.
  • Receives, reviews, and enters non-instructional reassignments and special assignments in PeopleSoft.
  • Generates faculty contracts. Reviews and notifies the division dean for contract approval.
  • Receives, reviews, and enters coaching assignments in PeopleSoft. Generates contracts and notifies the athletic director for contract approval.

College in the High School Support

  • Builds and maintains quarterly class schedules for College in the High School (CHS). Collaborates with the Director of High School Partnerships to research and resolve issues.
  • Calculates quarterly loads and generates contracts for College in the High School faculty.
  • Calculates special assignment stipends and generates contracts for CHS faculty mentors.

Administrative Support

  • Assists the AA4 – Class Schedule by building, updating, and publishing classes during peak production cycles
  • Establishes procedures and interprets and applies administrative policies for instructional divisions.
  • Monitors instructional support email accounts; responds to or refers inquiries as appropriate.
  • Attends monthly Instructional Support team meetings.

General Duties

  • Provide general support to the department, division, and campus by performing tasks that enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the instructional support team.
  • Contribute to departmental and campus-wide projects and initiatives that improve the academic experience for students and faculty.

Qualifications

The scholarship will comprise a full tuition fee award and an annual stipend paid at a rate set by the University of St Andrews. For 2025-2026, the stipend is £19,775 p.a., with an annual uplift published by the University each academic year.

Duration of award

Up to 3.5 years (full-time) or 7.0 years (part-time). Scholarship holders will be expected to have submitted their thesis for examination by the end of that period. The award term excludes the continuation period and any extension periods.

The stipend will be paid pro-rata to part-time students.

The Project

This research project investigates the powerful residual appeal of the British empire at the very point of its collapse. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Britain continued to invest in its overseas territories, and actively encouraged emigration by the white middle-classes to the newly imagined Commonwealth. In fiction and film, this global ‘new’ world was conceived as a space in which an exhausted nation could be revived, most commonly through tropes of man-making struggle. From the repair of wounded veterans to the training of cadets, the Commonwealth offered an antidote to austerity and a set of tests though which new forms of white masculinity might be forged. Narratives imagining outbound Commonwealth migration proliferated throughout the period. They were popular, influential, and numerous, and have received almost no scholarly attention. This project will address that gap, exploring the narrative fiction of an overlooked period – 1945-1965 – better to understand the stories of self and nation that shaped modern Britain.

The successful applicant will have considerable scope to determine the final focus of their research thesis, but it is anticipated that the project will embrace narratives across multiple media, examining (for instance) historical fiction that uses the past to access former colonies, as in John Masters’ popular India-set novels; fictions of development and extraction, such as Hammond Innes’s bestselling Campbell’s Kingdom (1952), in which the conquest of the Canadian wilderness is also the conquest, and resurrection, of the wounded male self; or cinematic attempts to refigure empire through ‘neutral’ plots – as in Where No Vultures Fly (1951), an Ealing Studios adventure reimagining the white colonial settler as a game warden. The investigation will be designed to interrogate the process and the consequences of storytelling: how the plotting of risk and reward, often in counterintuitive situations, facilitated the construction of acceptable masculinities and fantasies of post-war British identity.

The role

The School of Geographical Sciences is seeking to appoint a 1-year fixed term lecturer to deliver teaching across the undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, in hydrology and water governance. The successful individual will have experience of delivering lectures, practical’s and seminars to undergraduate and postgraduate students across the geographic domain.  The role holder will specialise in delivering teaching to our Year 2 and taught postgraduate students, with units that include Water management, Floods and Flows in River Basins, and Research Methods in Physical Geography, as well as supporting dissertations and Master’s research projects that tackle environmental risk to floods through the use of modelling and quantitative analysis. The successful applicant will lead the teaching on the Year 2 Hydrology unit that is critical in supporting students towards their Year 3 units on Drylands and Environmental Risk and Resilience. Further, they will be expected to provide support and contribute to the curriculum, including in field courses, tutorial and pastoral care across all year groups, as well as supervision across a range of dissertations at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

What will you be doing?

The successful candidate will be:

  • Teaching methods relevant to physical geography with a focus on numerical skills for quantifying water flow across urban and rural catchments
  • Guiding students to analyse the interacting social and hydrological processes governing contemporary water resources.
  • Supervising undergraduate and/or master’s level projects/dissertations supervision of projects focused on environmental flood risk, supporting students in applying modelling and quantitative analytical approaches.
  • Preparing and effectively delivering a pre-written course of lectures and practicals and preparing for, and leading, teaching in small groups, as required.
  • Setting and marking coursework, examinations and other assessment tasks in a timely fashion and to an appropriate standard.
  • Providing effective pastoral support to a limited number of students, referring them on for further help and/or guidance as necessary.

You should apply if

  • Evidence of an ability to teach appropriately in various ways at different levels and to communicate clearly material of a specialist or highly technical nature.

About the Role

As a Supervisor within the University of Bath’s Front of House team, you’ll take day‑to‑day operational responsibility for one of our busy hospitality outlets. You will lead shifts, support Food & Beverage Assistants and casual staff, and ensure smooth, efficient service at all times. Your duties will include delivering daily briefings, allocating tasks, managing breaks and maintaining our high standards of customer service.

You will be responsible for upholding all food safety, HACCP and due‑diligence procedures, monitoring wastage, overseeing orders and goods receiving, and ensuring accurate portion control. Clear communication with the kitchen team is essential, as is supporting the promotion of marketing campaigns and maintaining accurate menu and information displays.

The role also involves maintaining high health & safety standards, responding to incidents, reporting maintenance issues, and ensuring the workspace remains safe and compliant. You’ll contribute to on‑shift training, support team development, and be encouraged to bring fresh ideas to improve the way we work.

This is a full‑time role (36.5 hours, 5‑over‑7), including early mornings, evenings and weekends, in a fast‑paced, friendly campus environment with opportunities for progression, development, and genuine impact.
