Research Position in Biomedical Sciences – Immune Cell Biomechanics and Cancer job with Neuroscience and Biomedical Science Department -Universidad Carlos III de Madrid – (Jobs)

About the Opportunity

Are you passionate about mechanobiology, immunology, and cancer research? UC3M invites applications from researchers interested in joining a highly collaborative biomedical research environment focused on immune cell biomechanics and cancer.

Candidates with a doctoral degree are preferred. However, strong predoctoral candidates with relevant experience and a clear motivation to develop in this field may also be considered.

Research Environment The successful candidate will join the Faculty of Health Sciences at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) and work under the supervision of Dr. Armando del Río and Dr. Iván Ballesteros.

Dr. Armando del Río has moved from Imperial College London to UC3M’s new Faculty of Health Sciences to lead interdisciplinary biomedical research projects and help develop an internationally connected research environment in mechanobiology, immunology, and cancer biology.

The project combines advanced biophysical tools, single-cell omics, and cell biology to investigate how immune cell biomechanics influences cancer progression. The role offers access to a newly established biomedical research environment, interdisciplinary collaboration, and modern infrastructure.

The team maintains collaborations with international researchers and institutions, offering opportunities to work in a broad scientific network and contribute to projects with international visibility.

Collaborating Environment

The project may also involve collaboration with the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) in Madrid. CNIC is a major biomedical research centre focused on cardiovascular science and translational research, providing complementary expertise and an active research environment for biomedical projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement novel tools for the biomechanical analysis of immune cells.

• Investigate how biomechanical properties influence cancer progression in experimental models.

• Analyse omics datasets, with particular emphasis on single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and biophysical data.

• Contribute to collaborative research activities within an interdisciplinary and international environment.

• Participate in the preparation of scientific outputs, reports, presentations, and research proposals when relevant.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a motivated and independent researcher with a strong interest in mechanobiology, immunology, cancer biology, or closely related areas.

• PhD in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a closely related discipline is preferred.

• Predoctoral candidates with strong relevant training and experience may also be considered.

• Research experience in academic or research institutions will be valued.

• Experience in immune cell isolation and analysis, flow cytometry, omics approaches, or related methods is highly valued.

• Experience in cell culture, including cancer cell lines, is desirable.

• Background in biophysical analysis methods is an advantage.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.

What We Offer

• A role within a new and dynamic biomedical research environment at UC3M.

• The opportunity to join young teams working at the forefront of biomedical science.

• Access to state-of-the-art research infrastructure and advanced technologies.

• Continuous professional development and training in scientific and technical methodologies.

• A collaborative setting with links to national and international research partners.

Application Process

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the role is filled. Candidates should submit: CV, motivation letter, and contact details for at least 2 referees.

Applications should be sent directly by email to Dr. Armando del Río and Dr. Iván Ballesteros: arrioh@salud.uc3m.es  |  ivballes@salud.uc3m.es
